We learned all about the history of stampede, the tradition of the white hat, and Miss. Tucker even got dressed up like a cowboy/cowgirl.  The rest of the week was focused on our Trickster artist residency! We worked so hard all week to create our amazing performance with our Trickster Mr. Gamble! We hope everyone got to see it 😁 Lastly, the caterpillars have finally started to make their chrysalis'! We can't wait to see them start to emerge next week! We only have 2 more weeks of school left. It is hard to believe we only have 9 more school days of being in grade 1!  Happy Father's Day!

Our Learning May 27th-31st

Our Learning Math:  In math this week we started to wrap up learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We practiced counting faces, edges, and vertices of 3D shapes and sorted shaped based on their attributes. We even went outside and searched for 3D shapes hiding in our world. We found lots of cylinders at the playground! Science/Literacy:  In writing, we have started a class research project on Black bears in order to get ready for our upcoming field trip to the zoo! We have been learning and writing all about their bodies, habitats, and diets. We can't wait to learn even more next week at the zoo. Did you know baby bears are called cubs? Gym:  In gym, we have been working hard to create our own new games. We used all sorts of different equipment and worked with a partner to create a new, fun activity and then on Friday we got to teach our new games to our big buddies. We had so much fun!    Our Learning Math:  In math this week we started learning about 2D shapes. We sorted circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles. On Wednesday we went on a shape hunt in the library and on Thursday we even got to go on a shape hunt outside. We found so many different shapes hiding in the world around us. We can't wait to start learning about 3D shapes next week.  Writing:  In writing this week we have been continuing to focus on creating our best writing and fixing our mistakes. We are getting so good are using the sound/word wall to help us spell common words correctly and are getting way better at using all lowercases in our writing.  Science:  In science this week we started learning about plant life cycles and what they need to survive. We learned that plants need sun, water, air, and soil to live. When they get all these things they are able to grow from a seed, to a seedling, to a sprout, to a full grown plant! Social studies:  In so...

Our Learning Math:  In math this week we started revisiting patterns! We coloured and created 2 and 3 element patterns and learned that the "core" of a pattern is the part that repeats over and and over again. We practiced identifying the core of patterns and then labeled them with letters.  Writing: In Writing this week we started to focus on improving the quality of our writing, by making sure we are using tools like personal dictionaries and word walls. We are also learned how to go back and edit our work to fix mistakes with the help of a teacher. We are learning and writing about different types of flowers. This week we wrote about sunflowers and prairie crocuses.  Science:  In science this week we started to learn about the parts of different plants. We drew a picture of a flower and labeled it's parts. On Tuesday we learned about the parts of a tree. First we recreated the layers and parts of a tree with outrselves.   Our Learning This week was our last week with Mr.Orr. We are all very sad to see him leave, but we are so excited for him to start his new adventure as a teacher and know that he will be an amazing teacher!  Math:  In math this week we started learning about how to solve word problems. We learned how it is important to identify the important numbers and the math word that helps us figure out whether to add or subtract. Also did a really fun adding and subtracting Tetris game that Mr. Orr created!  Writing/Science:  This week in writing we worked on a project to show the learning we have been doing in science. We have been learning about prairie and mountain habitats and the types of plants and animals that exist there. We learned that the plants and animals that live in the mountains need to be able to survive cold weather, and that the plants and animals in the prairies need to withstand little moisture/water. In writing we created and wrote a booklet to shar...

Our Learning Math:  In math this week we started learning about fact family houses. Fact family houses help us to understand the relationship between adding and subtracting. We learned that adding is a commutative operation, meaning it doesn't matter the order that you add two numbers. 2+4=6 and 4+2=6. However, we learned that it DOES matter the order that we subtract numbers in. 6-2=4, but 6-4=2. First, we got to create our own fact family houses on the Chromebook's on a program called Lumio. On Friday, we started to create our own physical fact family houses to create a display on our classroom door.  Writing:  In writing, we started learning about a new type of writing called persuasive writing. We learned that the purpose of persuasive writing is to try and change someone's mind, or make them agree with you. For our persuasive writing unit we are starting a "Who Would Win" battle bracket. Each day we learn all about 2 animals and then decide who would win in...

Our Learning Math:  In math this week we continued to learn about subtraction. We are getting better at using a number line to subtract numbers within 20. It is hard to remember to jump the other direction when we are subtracting, after we learn to hop to the bigger numbers when adding, but we are getting so much better! Writing:  This week in writing we finally finished writing our twisted fairy tale stories! We have been rewriting the classic fairy tale of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have really been pushing ourselves to write 3 or 4 sentences a day and we are so proud of ourselves for how much we have grown in our writing! Science:  In science we have been continuing to learn about energy. This week we learned about how things move on a path. We started creating some pathway art using straight, zigzag, and wavy/curvy lines (pathways).  Social Studies:  We are learning about what life was like in Calgary 100-150 years in the past. It has been a big ...
