Our Learning April 2nd-April 5th
Our Learning
Math: In math this week we started learning about fact family houses. Fact family houses help us to understand the relationship between adding and subtracting. We learned that adding is a commutative operation, meaning it doesn't matter the order that you add two numbers. 2+4=6 and 4+2=6. However, we learned that it DOES matter the order that we subtract numbers in. 6-2=4, but 6-4=2. First, we got to create our own fact family houses on the Chromebook's on a program called Lumio. On Friday, we started to create our own physical fact family houses to create a display on our classroom door.
Writing: In writing, we started learning about a new type of writing called persuasive writing. We learned that the purpose of persuasive writing is to try and change someone's mind, or make them agree with you. For our persuasive writing unit we are starting a "Who Would Win" battle bracket. Each day we learn all about 2 animals and then decide who would win in a fight. We need to use the knowledge that we just learned about the animals to help support our opinion. This week, we wrote about the "battles" of grizzly bear -vs- lion, and gorilla -vs- jaguar. The grizzly bear and the gorilla won their battles and will be moving on to the semi-finals!
Science: In science Mr. Orr started teaching us about plants and animals! On Tuesday we learned how we can determine the difference between living and non-living things. Then we went outside on a scavenger hunt to see what living and non-living things we could find. Later in the week we learned about the differences between plants and animals. Did you know that animals are considered consumers because they need to eat other things to get their energy, while plants are considered producers because they can use water, and the sun to produce their own energy? One living thing we saw this week from our classroom window was 2 coyotes. We learned that coyotes are wild animals that are native to Alberta and are related to dogs!On Friday we also learned about a really and rare phenomenon that is happening on Monday called a solar eclipse. We discovered that is happens when the sun, moon and earth align, and the moon blocks or eclipses the light from the sun. One of the most important things we learned is that is it really dangerous to look directly at an eclipse, even if you're wearing sunglasses, so we will be staying inside at school on Monday to keep our eyes safe!
We were actually so excited about the snow on Thursday because it was perfect snowman snow! We learned earlier this year about the seasonal changes and activities that happen in winter as part of our Earth Systems unit in science. We had so much fun learning about to build snowmen!
