Our Learning

Writing:  This week in writing we learned about how we can share our ideas through detailed pictures as well as words. We learned that in order for our picture to tell a story it needs to have the 3 W's - a who, a what, and a where. We have also been practicing our letter printing. First we learned how to make a "magic c". It's magic because it the base for many other letters that we write including o, a, e, s, q, and d.

Math:  In math we have been learning about all the different ways we can show numbers. We discovered that we can show numbers with pictures, words, numerals, base ten blocks, ten frames and tallies. We have been practicing using 10 frames and base 10 blocks to represent numbers up to 10. We have also been practicing counting to 20 and even counted all the way up to 100 once!


Science: In science we have been learned about seasonal changes. Because it is fall we have been learning about the signs of fall. We have been reading books and discussing what plants, animals, and humans do during the fall. This week we went outside and collected and examined fallen leaves from the trees around the school. We sorted the leaves by colour, types of edges, and size. Then we used those leaves to create some awesome leaf rubbings. Each season we are going to create an art piece that depicts what a tree looks like in that season. For fall we painted trees using a technique called dot art. 


Social Studies: In social studies this week we began discussing Orange Shirt Day/ Truth and Reconciliation Day which is coming up next week. We discussed as a class how the indigenous peoples lived on this land before many of our ancestors came Canada. We also read a book called "When We Were Alone" which tells the story of a Grandmother sharing with her granddaughter some of what it was like being in a residential school. It talks about how they had to cut their hair and were not allowed to speak their language. As a class we are learning about why it is important to remember everything that happened in Canada's History good and bad so that we can be the best country we can be now.

   Our Learning Math:  In math this week we started revisiting patterns! We coloured and created 2 and 3 element patterns and learned that the "core" of a pattern is the part that repeats over and and over again. We practiced identifying the core of patterns and then labeled them with letters.  Writing: In Writing this week we started to focus on improving the quality of our writing, by making sure we are using tools like personal dictionaries and word walls. We are also learned how to go back and edit our work to fix mistakes with the help of a teacher. We are learning and writing about different types of flowers. This week we wrote about sunflowers and prairie crocuses.  Science:  In science this week we started to learn about the parts of different plants. Our Learning October 30th-Nov 3rd

Our Learning Math:  In math this week we we continued to practice representing and counting numbers to 100. We started learning about the final way we are going to learn to represent numbers, a number line. We discussed how we use clues to figure our where a number should go on a number line. We practiced putting numbers on a big number line as a whole class and we also practiced used a beaded number line to figure out where numbers up to 100 go on a number line! We also started to learn about what it means to add to numbers together and practiced some adding using pictures to help us! Literacy:  This week in writing we continued to work on sounding out words on our own and hearing all the sounds in a word. We are starting to become more confident in our ability to sound out words on our own. We also started to learn about the elements of a story. Our Learning October 10th-13th

   Our Learning Math:  In math this week we started to learn our numbers all the way up to 100!!! We practiced counting by 1's and 10's and started by making our own 100 chart to help up to know what each number looks like. Our favourite thing in math this week was playing BINGO! It helped us to recognize what numerals all the way up to 100 looked like.                                                            Literacy:  In writing this week we learned about the difference between a letter, a word and a sentence. We learned that sentences include 3 very important things: an uppercase at the beginning, finger spaces, and end punctuation.
