  Our Learning

Math: In math this week we we continued to practice representing and counting numbers to 100. On Monday we built numbers using base 10 blocks and we are getting really good at it! We learned that numbers have different place value spots. The number in the tens place shows how many groups of 10 there are, and the number in the ones place shows how many ones cubes/ones units there are.

Literacy: In writing this week we have been continuing to learn about how to write in a full sentence. We used pattern sentences (sentences where we are given the beginning and have to fill in the last word) to describe some local animals like white tailed jack rabbits, and squirrels. Then we even got to describe a halloween picture and try to challenge ourselves to write more than one sentence!

Science: In science this week we furthered our exploration into the scientific method by conducting another experiment. In this experiment our question was "What will happen if we mix baking soda and vinegar in a bottle with a balloon on top?". The students had many good hypotheses as to what would happen such as "it will explode" and "it will get hot". When we conducted the actual experiment we discovered that the balloon actually inflated all on it's own. We discussed that this happens (in simplest terms) because baking soda and vinegar make bubbles when you mix them together and bubbles are filled with gas/air. When the bubbles pop the gas/air has to go somewhere and it gets trapped in the balloon.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we returned to our discussion about groups and communities we belong to, to discuss the different types of communities that people can live in: Urban, Suburban, and Rural. To gain a deeper understanding of what these types of communities really look like and some of their features, we used the Chromebooks for the first time to explore some of these communities on Google Earth. We discovered that Urban communities, like downtown Calgary, have lots of tall buildings, streets, cars and people, but not a lot of grass, or trees. On Thursday we were able to explore some suburban communities and discovered that Southwood and Canyon Meadows are suburban communities. We saw that these communities have lots of houses, grass, parks and trees. There is more space here, but you can still easily walk to your neighbours house.
