Our Learning October 2nd- October 6th

 Our Learning

Math: In math this week we continued our investigation into how to represent numbers and applied our knowledge of base ten blocks to represent numbers to 20 (our teen numbers). First we built numbers with the actual blocks, and then we practiced counting base ten blocks that showed teen numbers. To end the week we did a fun math scavenger hunt (Count the room) around the room.

Writing: This week in writing, with Thanksgiving approaching, we discussed what it means to be thankful. We read the story "The Grateful Book" and then brainstorm and wrote about things that we are grateful for in OUR lives. We also continue to work on our descriptive writing by drawing and describing pumpkin pie!

Science: This week in science we wrapped up our learning about signs of fall. We learned about what animals do in the fall to get ready to survive the winter. We discovered that many animals either hibernate, migrate or adapt. We learned that animals like bears eat lots of food and get fat to get ready to hibernate, birds start to fly to warmer places, animals like foxes grow thicker fur, and animals such as rabbits change the colour of their fur to camouflage to survive.

In science this week we also did a super fun Thanksgiving themed STEM project. We learned what it means to be an engineer (they build something that solves a problem). Then we talked about the design process and how if our plan doesn't work we can always go back and make changes or improvements. For our problem we learned about how a couple of years ago there was a city that had a bunch wild turkeys on the loose. Then we read the story "How to Catch a Turkey" to give us some ideas of how we could catch a turkey. The students created so many unique traps involving nets, glue traps, cages, etc.
